I love that his hair looks like it could be red...
I love seeing how much his auntie a loves him.

to eat or not to eat?
that is the question.
Levi is 5 months old now. For the life of me, I don't know what to do about food. Everyone I talk to says, oh I started my kid at 4 months on solids. Everything I read, however, says to wait until they are 6 months before beginning on solids, so I waiver.. do I do what everyone says to do, or do I wait?
Right now, he is getting cereal twice a day, once in the morning, and once at night. I think I'll stick with this for the moment, but then comes the inevitable
in what order do I introduce foods?
Some things say veggies first, green specifically, then I read things that say don't introduce peas and other things because of allergies. Then move to orange veggies, then eventually fruit. Then, I read oh it doesn't really matter. It makes my head hurt, why isn't there a chart that says... do this, this and then this....
However, he is nursing more and more frequently these days and I don't know if it's because he's hungry or what. maybe, maybe not. I think it might be because it's hot and we all tend to snack more and eat less during the summer months.
Any thoughts, fellow mama's?

we're going camping now we're on our way
we're off for our first tent camping adventure with a kid.
may we come back in one piece, not soaked,
and having had a wonderful time with some great friends.
In other news, our van broke yesterday and we thought it was going to cost us uber money to fix, and it came in at less than $200 dollars.
Thank you Lord!

on strike
This kid of ours has decided the world is too interesting to eat. Why take the time, right? Too many grand things to see and explore. I would say that 80% of the time, he does not seem interested in nursing. I have no idea what has caused this new occurence, but I can tell you I am extremely frustrated. I've read up on it, and I wonder if perhaps it's what they call a "nursing strike"?
Sounds kind of funny doesn't?
I have this visual of nurses in white dresses
and hats walking around with picket signs, but I digress...
He wants to snack, not eat. I don't know if it's the hotter weather that has caused this phenomenon, or what, but I'm frustrated with it. Most of the time, eating ends in a screaming match. The only times he eats well are in the morning when he wakes up and in the evening when he goes to sleep.
So I hit the checklist.
1) Has my diet changed? NO
2) Has there been an extreme schedule change? NO
3) Is he teething? Possibly? He stuffs everything into his mouth, but i dont' see or feel any teeth.
4) Ear infection? He doesn't seem fussy or to be running a fever.
5) Cold? I don't think so.
6) I wonder if he just wants more than milk to eat. He is just getting one bowl of cereal right now, and I'm afraid that if I try to do more then he'll be even less interested in nursing. So for now, I keep forcing the issue, and figure he'll eat when he's hungry, though I am worried about my milk production.....
The only thing I can think of is that I hadn't been taking a prenatal vitamin, I kept forgetting to buy them. I started taking them again, and I wonder if that's changed things... maybe? I don't know.
Seriously? When did I talk like this before having a kid?
All decency goes out the window, I swear.

success
A month ago we were still getting up with Levi once if not twice a night. It took several weeks, including a few very rough nights, but we've arrived.
Last night Levi slept from 9:30-6:15. without so much as a peep.
it's bliss..
like 3 scoops of mint chocolate chip ice cream

(or your favorite kind of ice cream) on an extremely hot muggy day kind of bliss. :)

living simply
Mike and I often talk about ways to simplify our lives. We long for days filled with a farm house surrounded by fields, gardens, and a seamlessly ending day. We dream of owning a home on several acres where we can have a big garden, hang clothes outside to dry, where our kids can run and play, where we can explore the woods, catch fireflies, learn about nature, all while bread is rising in the kitchen.
You can dream? Right?
BUT...
How do we logistically make that happen?
How do we combine that with our desire to be in ministry someday.... with my desire to continuing teaching?
How do we combine these dreams and glorify God through the process?
Just thoughts that are swirling around in my head today.

mission accomplished.
success...sweet success....

We have successfully sleep trained this little guy.
He is basically sleeping from 9-5 now.
I feed him at 5, and he goes back down til around 8 or so. He was a stubborn one. It took him a good 2 weeks to get him to realize that mama wasn't going to feed him anymore in the night and he still tests us occassionally but he's pretty much figured out that he's done in the middle of the night. :) hooray!!!
Since getting him to sleep through the night,
I've noticed that his day schedule is MUCH more predictable.
Awake from 8-10
Nap from 10-12
Awake from 12-4
Nap from 4-5:30-6
Then he's basically up until he goes down for bed. I'm still working on getting him to go to bed earlier. Since getting him to sleep through the night he wants to nurse every hour in the evening, but I'll take that to not getting up in the night, and I know eventually he'll settle down into a better schedule for the evening.
I've been continuing my research this week on baby food and I found this WEBSITE Check it out! It's chocked full of great ideas, how to's and good timelines to follow. Everything I've read says to wait until 6 months to start solids. I think maybe we'll start a second bowl of cereal in the morning in a week or so, and see how that goes before making any more decisions on food.
Oh and he's no longer stationary.. he rolls EVERYWHERE! We were at Mike's parents over the weekend. I laid him on a blanket in a side room to take a nap, and when I went back in to check on him later, he had woken up and had rolled under the desk... no more leaving this guy unattended...
And one more just because he's so cute when he's sleeping. He is officially a tummy sleeper now. We put him on his back, but he immediately rolls to his tummy and sleeps comfortably that way the rest of the night. I don't blame the kid, both mama and papa are tummy sleepers as well.

10 little fingers....
poor little guy...

we were using these....

which resulted in us using this....

which ended in this....

which equaled one of both of these guys favorite things...
daddy and levi time....

we were cutting levi's fingernails, and we don't even know what happened, but next thing we knew, levi's poor little thumb was bleeding like crazy. we put pressure on, held it above his little head, and got it stopped. i think we were both more upset than he was. he cried at the offset of the snipping of his fingertip, but he calmed right down and was pretty much happy after that...mom and dad might be scarred a touch from the incident though...

baby food 101
i've been researching baby food as of late. we've been contemplating making it. it's well... cheaper, and i like that i control what goes into it.
so then come the questions?
1) how do i do it?
2) how thin do i make it?
3) how do i know when to move to the next "stage", how do i make that work in my blender\food processor?
4) in what order do i introduce foods?
5) how much should he eat, when should he get it?
He seems to be eating more and more cereal. I call him my little bird, he eats and just keeps opening his mouth for me. Tonight, I made up one bowl, he scarfed it and kept wanting more, so I made more and he ate all of that as well. So.. that leads to the next question.. when does he get 2 bowls of cereal?
when should i introduce another grain?
what kind next?
what about water, juice?
our ped said he could have juice.. we haven't given it straight up because it seems crazy to me, but we do mix it in with his cereal...
so many questions, and from what i can delve off the fabuluous internet...
there doesn't seem to be a uniform answer, other than...
"each child develops at his\her own pace"
not.helpful.
the search continues....

a heavy heart
My heart has been heavy this last week.
A dear friend of mine from college has been pregnant, carrying twins. She didn't know she was carrying twins until she went in for her gender ultrasound. She found out she was carrying two precious boys, however, one baby was not alive. One twin was what they called an acardic twin. The baby was never alive, but had developed along with the other twin, but with the absence of organs. Her baby in particular had a body, legs and arms, but that was all.
After consulting with doctors, they decided they would be scheduled for surgery, because, the healthy baby was working overtime giving nutrients to the second baby, even though it was not alive. She was going to have surgery where they would remove the second baby in an attempt to keep the first baby healthy. Meanwhile, they put her on immediate bedrest as she was high risk for pre-term labor.
Sunday, she went into labor, they were unable to stop it, and she gave birth to both boys. The one, obviously was never alive, the other baby lived about 15 minutes before passing away. She was just shy of 22 weeks when she had them.
Tomorrow is the funeral. My sister and I are going. I've never been to a baby funeral. The youngest funeral I've ever attended was for a dear friend I lost in college. I feel completely at a loss of what to say to her, but at the same time, I know how it feels to lose a baby. I know how much it hurts, and I know that she is hurting inside. But, it's times like this that make me glad that I have a glimmer of understanding, and am thankful that I have a past experience that allows me to understand how it feels to be in those shoes.
So, tomorrow.. we'll go, and I'll hug her, and I don't doubt I will cry right along with her, and know that in times like this, it is when we can depend on friends, family, and most importantly, our GOD, to see us through.

Garage Sales
This spring I've been thoroughly enjoying Garage Sale-ing.
I've never been much into, because I've never really found much at them, but having a kid brings a whole new life to garage sales. They are filled with GREAT clothes that are hardly worn, because they wear it so little before growing out of it.
Friday morning my sister's neighborhood had a big garage sale. Armed with my money, and 2 good friends, we set off to find some deals. It was a PERFECT day for the sale. Sunny, 70, and Levi slept in his stroller.
We traversed up and down the road for about 2 hours. I snagged some great deals on books. I LOVE books, both Mike and I love reading, so we are trying to get books for Levi all the time. I got about 2 1\2 dozen books for him, for about $2. One set I was looking at was a set of books from the National Wildlife Federation. Each book was about a particular animal, and then used colors and shapes to teach about them. They were really cute. I was kind of perusing, thinking... mmm... is a quarter worth these, when the guy running the sale, piped in and said.. I'll sell you all of those for $1. SURE, i said, I'll take them. There are probably 2 dozen books in the set. I also snagged a great edition of the Velveteen Rabbit, and the first Winnie the Pooh book. I also snagged a few other board books as well.
I wasn't finding too many clothes, but I've come to terms with the fact that clothes don't seem to be as readily available for boys as they do for girls. sad, but true. Well, I happened upon a friend and she directed me to a sale where they were getting rid of boy clothes and boy did I hit the motherload! A HUGE table piled high of clothes ranging in size from 3-6 months to 2T. Not to mention, GREAT labels. Now, don't get me wrong, I could really care less about the label of clothing, but if I can get a nice brand for dirt cheap, SIGN ME UP! I snagged clothes for Levi for this coming winter, and even some things into next spring. I know it's far out, but one thing I do know.. Levi will grow, and if I can get clothes for cheaper than new, then I'll take it.
I got him
6 long sleeve shirts.
3 pairs of pants, a pair of bib overalls,
a really nice spring and winter coat,
some baby enstein blocks,
a xylophone, some duplo blocks,
a couple of blues clues video's and 2 puzzles.
plus the 2 1\2 dozen books.
Overall, I spent about $21 on everything.
Garage Sale-ing has become strangely satisfying and I also feel like I'm being a good steward of the resources God has given us, and that's even better.

Making Progress
That's what we're calling it.
Last night Levi ate at 7:30, fell asleep, and woke up at 9:30. He ate a little, then we put him down for the night. He woke up at 2, crying. The only reason we go into his room is to flip him over. You see, Levi is really great at rolling from his back to his tummy, but he struggles to roll from his tummy to his back. And, he pretty consistently flips to his tummy to sleep at night now, but when he wakes up on his tummy, he is MAD... really mad and he really can't flip himself back, so we succumb and go in and flip him over.
Anyway, it's easier for Mike to go in because mama = milk so it's better if he doesn't see me. So, Mike went in, rolled him to his back, and before he was back in our room, Levi was sound asleep.
Can I get a hip-hip-hooray????
I woke up at 5:27 to the birds chirping (my favorite) and thought... wow.....Levi is going to sleep through until 6 (when the alarm was set to go off), and then, just as if he heard me thinking that, he started crying from the other room. I fed him, and he went back down. I was thrilled, elated, practically jumping up and down.
What it felt like to sleep like that...
and then my... not so morningish husband says...
"Levi, you couldn't wait until 6 to get up?"
(I might add he said this after he slept while I was feeding the kid)
"Seriously?" I responded, "We just got more sleep than we have in the last 4 months, and you're going to complain that we have to get up a 1\2 hour earlier than normal?"
Mike shrugged his shoulders as if to say. YUP. I am. I'm tired and want to sleep a little longer.
My insides said, "too bad, buck-o, get out of bed and be thankful for the sleep you got". But, in an effort to make my grumpy husband less grumpy, I got up, went downstairs, and made us pancakes for breakfast. He changed his tune pretty quickly after that.
We are going camping the end of this month, and our goal is that he is completely sleeping through the night by then.
We're getting there.

crying = sleepless nights
tell me it gets worse before it gets better.
please.
Levi was up every 2 hours last night. S.C.R.E.A.M.I.N.G.
We never gave in. I made him wait 8 hours to eat
but the mama in me of course kept second guessing..
maybe he didn't eat enough before he went to bed..
maybe he really DOES need to eat..
you know the drill.
so this is what happened...
he ate at 8. went to sleep. woke up at 12:30 fussed for about 15 minutes, settled down. woke up at 2 cried pretty hard for 10ish minutes calmed down. woke up at 3:30 SCREAMING.. continued screaming for 30 minutes before falling asleep. woke up at 5 and it had been more than 8 hours so i fed him.
the 3:30 was just a 1\2 hour early on 8 hours,
but i feel like if we give in at 7 1\2 we will back track again.
i'm so tired this morning.
everything i read says 3-5 days before they get it. we're on day 4. so maybe tonight is the magic night?
please.

tis the season....

the season to be miserable that is.
i am deathly allergic to cottonwood trees. why? i don't know.
want to know how i discovered said allergy? one summer my family walked a trail up by sleeping bear dunes marked... the cottonwood trail.. yeah. that wasn't fun.
it's the only thing i'm allergic to, but boy am i allergic to these things.
i'm miserable when they bloom. on saturday when we were out planting our garden, i felt it, my eyes getting itchy, my nose, stuffy. i hadn't seen the white stuff flying yet, but i said to mike.. they're around somewhere, i KNOW it... the next day, i saw them flying.
last year i was miserable, mostly because i was pregnant and couldn't really take much. i could have taken more than i did, but with a miscarriage under our belts i was too freaked out to take anything, so i didn't, and oh did i mention that we lived in a backyard with 8 cottonwood trees?
thankfully this year we don't live there anymore, but my new dilemna is that i'm nursing, so basically i still can't take anything. so here i sit with itchy red eyes, wishing i could take something, but thankful that it's raining this morning which keeps them at bay.... for now.
